So! I very recently just finished my first knitting project that involved me completely improvising a pattern all on my own. And I think I pulled it off. ^_^V What is this newly-invented creation, you ask? Why, an Alphonse Elric hat, of course, made as a Christmas present for yuuo! When I asked her what she wanted from me this year, she sent me this picture and said that was what she would most love to have (and, speaking of presents, yuuo and kuchenhexe, your presents are coming, honest! I'll have them there soon!). So I did my best to make a knitting project that looked like that, and I have pictures to prove it!

There I am modeling it (hope you don't mind, yuuo!).
Isn't it cute? ^_^ I'm actually rather proud of it--it even made my mom smile when she saw it, and she's never watched a shred of anime in her life. And, I figure, everyone should be able to have a cute little Al hat in their lives if they want one, so here I am posting the pattern for posterity--all you knitters out there are welcome to use it. It's a pretty simple pattern, probably nothing more than a slightly-advanced beginners level. ^_^
Alphonse Elric Hat Pattern
Supplies -Worsted weight yarn (originally done in 6 oz. worsted weight) in grey or greyish blue for hat, white worsted weight or finer for tassel -16” long circular and doublepoint needles US size 5 (or size needed to get desired gauge) -A crochet hook small enough to fit between stitches in knitted fabric -Tapestry needle -Embroidery floss and/or accent yarn in white, black and pink, if desired
Gauge In circular Stockinette stitch, 1 row of 15 stitches equal 2 inches
Size 1 size fits average adult head. Any size adjustments should be made in 24-stitch increments (added or subtracted) and distributed evenly throughout pattern suggestions. However, do NOT make any adjustments from Step 9 on.
Making the Hat 1) Cast on 120 stitches (30 on each of 4 needles if using the dpns to start), place a marker, and join into a round, being careful not to twist the stitches. 2) Rounds 1-6: p18, k3, p18, k3, purl to end of round. 3) Round 7: p18, k4, p16, k4, purl to end of round. 4) Rounds 8-12: p18, k24, purl to end of round. 5) Rounds 13-14: p17, k26, purl to end of round. 6) Round 15: knit. Continue to knit in rounds for 2”. 7) Switch to dpns, 30 sts on each of 4 needles (if not already in use) and begin decreases to shape crown of hat as follows:
Round 1: 1st needle: k1, ssk, ssk, knit to end of needle. 2nd needle: knit to within 5 sts of end of needle, k2tog, k2tog, k1. 3rd needle: k1, ssk, ssk, knit to end of needle. 4th needle: knit to within 5 sts of end of needle, k2tog, k2tog, k1.
Round 2: knit. 8) Continue to work these last two rounds until there are 64 sts left (16 on each needle). 9) Work the decrease round until 20 sts remain (5 on each needle). 10) Knit through back loop one round. 11) Shape spike as follows:
Round 1: k8, k2tog, k8, k2tog. Round 2: k7, k2tog, k7, k2tog. Round 3: k6, k2tog, k6, k2tog. Round 4: k5, k2tog, k5, k2tog. Round 5: k4, k2tog, k4, k2tog. Round 6: k3, k2tog, k3, k2tog. Round 7: k2, k2tog, k2, k2tog. Round 8: k1, k2 tog, k1, k2tog.
12) Break yarn, leaving a 6” length, and using a tapestry needle, draw tail through remaining 4 sts. 13) Weave in all ends. 14) Block hat as needed to ease rolling of edges. 15) For tassel, cut desired lengths of white yarn (as many as desired). Using a crochet hook, attach lengths as fringe to rear of hat at bottom of spike. 16) Trim tassel ends to even length. 17) Optional: Using accent yarn and/or embroidery floss, add face to front of hat via embroidery and/or duplicate stitch.
There you go! Enjoy! ^_^ |
